Agriculture

About 70% of the total population of Orissa lives in villages and about 75 % of the total workforce depends on agriculture. The cropped area is about 87.46 lakh hectares out of which 18.79 lakh hectares are irrigated. Climate and soil play vital role in Orissa’s agricultural economy. The total cultivable land exploited for cropping is about 40% of the total geographical area and the exploitation is comparatively more in the coastal districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttak, Puri and Ganjam.

The major crops are rice, pulses, oil seeds, jute, coconut and turmeric. The crops like tea, cotton, groundnut and rubber are of great economic importance in other parts. Orissa contributes one tenth of the total rice produced in the country.

Major agricultural crops (in different districts):-

Rice: The crop is largely grown in the districts of Balasore, Cuttack, Mayurbhanj, Puri and Bhadrak.

Pulses: Pulses are cultivated in the districts like Balasore, Bhadrak, Ganjam and Mayurbhanj in large excess.

Maize, ragi, Bajra: The districts like Koraput, Kalahandi and Balangir are the major producer of these crops.

Oil seeds: The crops like, groundnut, mustard, castor and linseed are the main oilseeds grown in Orissa. These are best produced in the districts of Balasore, Kalahandi, Sambalpur, and Dhenkanal.

Industries:

The govt. of Orissa has been urging several financial institutions to encourage the establishment of new industrial units in backward states .It has been asking the central Government to initiate such policies in regard to licensing fiscal; financial matters to encourage to establish the new industrial units in the state. Since Independence 49 large Scale industries have been setup in public and Private Sector in the state, of which most of them are mineral based.

Govt. of India concluded contracts with the leading steel manufacturing companies of other countries during 1954-56 for the establishment of modern integrated and iron plants on package deal basis . This was a great step towards the laying of a stable foundation for the industrial development of the country. As a result, a German combine of West Germany built on integrated iron steelwork at Rourkela in Sundargarh district on northern Orissa. Rourkela is connected by railways with calcutta and other industrial towns of West Bengal. Being located at Calcutta-Mumbai railway line it is conveniently connected with industrial towns of morden India.

Industrial Policy:

The Government of Orissa has formulated a liberal industrial policy known as “Industrial Policy 2001”. The policy focuses on various avenues where Orissa has the expertise e.g., minerals, Tourism, IT and Village Industries etc.
